Johann van der Sandt - The value of choir singing and the sense of belonging that this brings.

"And I think even across the cultures and especially now where South African music is, and South African communities are after 24 years of democracy, the new South can be heard in the sound of the choirs. And when they come here, it's a message that's so strong, because of the South African spirit that's being transmitted." says Johann van der Sandt, professor in music pedagogy at the Faculty of Education, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy.

He is doing his research in community singing and he is talking about the great value of choir singing and the sense of belonging that this brings. Johann has conducted the choir at the University of Pretoria before taking on the role of choir master of the Drakensberg Boys choir. He is now not only doing research work at the University of Bozen-Bolzano but he is also greatly involved in different choirs in his area. Hear more about why he calls himself a "choir Junky" and what his wishes are for the future.
