"We're going into a really positive phase for the arts", says Jan Malan, Director, producer and Choreographer. "If people have just the savvy, you know. They need to think out of the box. They can't try and keep things the way it was before. The world is a stage so they need to find ways how they can change their concepts, and this is what I've learnt, to suit smaller spaces." Jan and his husband Greg Meyer their company, Umzingeli, staged many high profile productions all over the world until the pandemic and Lockdowns have created a big turning point in their work. It's from their unique theatre in Paternoster on the West coast of South Africa that Jan is talking about how this wonderful theatre came about and how much the community and surrounding towns are benefitting from having some of the most talented South African artists perform on the stage of the "Koelkamers".
