Gerrit has also taken on the role as Director of Choirs and Assistant Professor of Music at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. This prestigious appointment is a testament to his expertise and accomplishments in the field of choral music. Gerrit's academic journey is equally impressive; he completed a Bachelor of Music degree at Pretoria University, which laid the foundation for his advanced studies. He then earned a Master of Music degree from Missouri State University, where he had the privilege of studying choral conducting with Cameron LaBarr. His academic pursuit reached its pinnacle with a doctorate in choral conducting from the University of Washington, where he studied under the guidance of esteemed conductors Geoffrey Boers and Giselle Wyers.
